I can’t say for sure when this neck was made, but can safely say it was after 1985 (when Martin first started using an adjustable truss rod in their necks). I bought the neck probably 20 years ago at Martin from the Guitarmaker’s Connection, which is their parts/kit shop. Back then that shop got in all kinds of cool stuff from the production floor over on Sycamore Street, and they would sell you any and all of it. This neck clearly came off of a guitar, as it has two holes drilled through the 15th fret slot which was done to facilitate the introduction of steam into the neck joint to remove the neck. Could be that it was removed from a guitar body that was damaged in production before it made it to completion. The neck is as one would expect to find right off a finished guitar… Factory assembled, carved and finished. The barrel has a comfortable, standard Martin style “C” profile, not a vintage or low profile. The nut width is 1 11/16. The neck shows all of the proper appointments of a style 45 including the “CF Martin” abalone block inlay in the headstock, abalone vintage style 45 fret board inlays and ivoroid fret board & headstock binding and heel cap. The headstock and fret board also have black/white purflings. The nut is installed and slotted. The truss rod functions perfectly. I mentioned in the title “D-42 or D-45″ because on the dovetail the neck is marked from the factory as a D-42 neck, however, the fret board inlay pattern is not a style 42 pattern but rather a style 45 pattern. The neck is in excellent condition. It is missing the 15th and 20th frets, easy to replace, and will need the holes at the 15th fret plugged. In addition, the piece of binding at the end of the fret board has shrunken away from the mitered joints at the corners, so replacing that end piece would be necessary. Other than that it is perfect.
